Herp virus (Herpesvirus cyprini) is believed to be causing smallpox. Healthy fish that have been in contact with patients can also transmit the disease. The virus infects fish of the cyprinid family, mainly from two or more years. The disease was recorded in other species that live in an environment characterized by low temperature and its sharp jumps (crucian carp, ides, breams, roaches). The appearance of the disease contributes to inadequate feeding, unsanitary conditions, leading to a decrease in immunity and a genetic predisposition.
Symptoms of the disease
Smallpox does not affect the behavior of fish, they lead a normal lifestyle, despite the struggle of the immune system with the disease. The diagnosis is determined by external signs. The skin and fins of fish affected by this disease are covered with whitish and bluish-milk spots, having an oval or round shape, the surface of which is shiny and smooth. Over time, these spots are converted into raised formations with a friable, soft surface and acquire a yellow, gray or pink hue. Fins of fish with smallpox are covered with croup raids located in a group. Further, these formations harden, acquiring a rough, uneven surface and resembling a frozen wax, and in cases of severe lesions merge, becoming a continuous shell. A long course of the disease and severe damage to the skin is fraught with softening of the skeletal bones, leading to more serious, irreversible consequences - skeleton deformation. The lethal outcome from smallpox is a rare phenomenon, it is not contagious, it does not pose a danger to humans. To confirm the diagnosis, a study of scraping is performed under a microscope, which allows to exclude the parasitic origin of the disease.
Due to the fact that the causes of the disease are still unknown, there is no special treatment for smallpox. When fish are placed in the early stages of the disease in running, clean water, epithelial formations pass and the disease recedes. But it never passes completely, since the virus remains in the fish’s body forever and with weakening of the immune system, the disease will surely appear again. Since there are no treatment methods, we can only talk about prevention. The main condition for the health of the inhabitants of the aquarium is its cleanliness and good sanitary condition. Adequate amount of varied and nutritious food is very important. In case of low calcium content in water and soil, it is necessary to introduce 5% chalk into the fish diet. Producers for spawning should be selected very carefully, they must be completely healthy. In the absence of selection, the genetic program of each next generation tends to worsen.
